Imagine reading the Wings of Fire series... without Sky Kingdom! Imagine Alice and Wonderland without Wonderland or Peter Pan without Neverland! Imagine any of your favorite fiction novels taking place in a completely dull and colorless setting! Would it be just as memorable and grasping? Would you even want to continue reading the book? In this one time course, students will learn about one of the most important and foundational, yet often overlooked aspects of creative stories: settings!...
Students will understand how setting plays an important role in shaping fiction stories. Students will use their favorite author's writing to identify elements of good writing techniques in relation to settings. Students will write create a setting to begin their own creative writing piece.
Prior to class, students should think about their favorite setting in a fiction book. They will share this at the beginning of the class.
-Notebook paper, possibly a sketch pad -Pencil or pen (or a digital way to capture ideas and write) -Student's favorite fantasy novel/s (if they have one available on hand).
