Writing Using Picture Books: Voice
What's included
1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this one time class we will discuss what voice means in writing and why it is important. We will read passages from the picture book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst together in class. We will notice the author's use of voice as well as repetition. The students will then create their own short writing about a bad day that they have experienced. I will write along with my students and share my writing to insure that students will feel comfortable sharing their writing. Students will encourage one another by sharing their work and commenting on what they like about the writing paying close attention to the use of voice and repetition.
Learning Goals
Students will practice strategies to strengthen their voice in order to enrich their writing using the picture book discussed in class. This lesson will give students the chance to express the way they feel when they have a bad day. They will make personal connections as well as develop empathy for characters in stories.
