Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 10
Note: I have two different tutoring schedules each year: summer and school year. I also have one-time availability that may not be listed. Please contact me for one-time availability.

24-25 weekly tutoring hours begin August 28th. There are a limited number of weekly spots available for the 24-25 school year. Please contact me for available weekly spots for the semester if they are not listed. Availability for one-time or occasional sessions will be updated weekly throughout the semester. However, with changes to Outschool’s listings, my one-time slots may not show as available. Please message me if you want a one-time meeting, and I will send the available spots for that week.

Please note that this class time will change based on Daylight Savings Time for the Central time zone.

2025 Summer tutoring hours will begin June 1. All summer available times will be listed in May, 2025. Weekly, occasional, and one-time sessions will be available.

In this 1:1 tutoring session, the learner will receive guidance on paragraph, report, or essay writing. Each class will involve instruction in an aspect of the writing process and may include grammar/spelling rules, editing, and writing practice. Care will be taken to scaffold the lesson and to tailor the instruction to the learner. Instruction in structure and style will be based on the IEW writing method.

If only a single class session is needed, please let me know the most pressing need and upload to the classroom both the assignment directions and the progress on the assignment.

When submitting work to be evaluated during class, please upload files that are typed or very neatly handwritten. The files should be uploaded to the most recent post in the tutoring classroom. Photos of handwritten work may be submitted provided the photos are oriented in the correct direction, taken from directly above, and fill the frame of the picture. File formats can be word documents, PDFs, or links to google docs. If I cannot read it, I will ask for a different file to be uploaded. All submitted assignments must be double-spaced.

Options for ongoing weekly class content:
* An IEW theme-based book purchased by the learner. Options include: People and Places in the Community, Fables Myths and Fairy Tales, Ancient History-Based Writing Lessons, Medieval History-Based Writing Lessons, and US History-Based Writing Lessons. Only one student book is required.
*Structure and Style for Students may be purchased by the learner. The learner may first watch the videos provided by IEW. We will work on or edit and revise the weekly assignments during our class together. All SSS curriculums are available. If you prefer for me to teach the material without the videos, please let me know. (Note: I have not watched all of the videos of each level.)
* The IEW Writing Source Packet can be purchased by the learner from IEW. (The book version is available from IEW for purchase. The PDF version is only available through the IEW premium membership. Premium membership trials are offered occasionally by IEW.) I will tailor the instruction to the learner and assign exercises based on texts from the packet.
* The learner may bring to the class their particular writing assignments from another source for us to work through together. Please upload the assignment directions, grading rubric, and assignment progress.
* If the learner prefers, I can choose sources for our writing based on the materials I have developed for other IEW Level A (elementary reading level) classes.

*Note: I can also tutor The Lost Tools of Writing Level One for grades 7 and up. The Lost Tools of Writing Level One Student workbook is required for class.

NOTE: Please specify in the classroom which IEW book from the options listed above that you own or will be purchasing. If you have an assignment to work through, please upload it to the classroom with the assignment directions. If a preference is not stated, we will begin with a Unit 1, Level A source text that I provide.
