Assignments
1-2 hours per week. Again, this is choose-your-own adventure. Students can do as much or as little work outside of one-on-one classes as they choose. If I give your students exercises to work on outside of sessions, I will expect them to follow through. If I'm tutoring them for a formal project or goal, I will expect them to put in the work to do their own research and writing outside of sessions.Grading
Any kind of grade or assessment is available upon request depending on the length and intensity of the one-on-one instruction.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 12
It's choose-your-own-adventure in this one-on-one class. I'm happy to do a set class length, individual sessions, or ongoing sessions; whatever works best for your family. I am an experienced writing tutor at the middle, high school, and college levels. I have worked with students on their writing skills for nearly every academic discipline, with a particular emphasis on the humanities and social sciences. I am also a professional creative writer and journalist, and am experienced running workshops, critique, and editing sessions featuring a wide variety of writing styles for different domains. No matter your student's interest, I'm happy to help. I will tutor academic writing, personal creative projects, personal essays, and more. Please note that I will not outline, write, or edit your student's writing for them; my role is as a guide, equipping each learner with the skills they need to complete projects themselves. I take a Socratic approach to my teaching, so your student should expect to be an engaged participant in their own learning, asking and answering questions and bringing their own ideas, thoughts, perspectives, and outside work to the table.
Learning Goals
Students will develop their analytical and critical thinking skills by engaging in independent tutoring with an experienced instructor.
Students will actively engage with academic and creative material that gives them a greater understanding of themselves, their world, and their culture.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students will be exposed to a wide variety of ideas, views, and perspectives while working on their writing skills and assignments. I often give reading or writing homework exercises to students that come from a variety of sources. Students writing academic papers will have to engage with potentially hot-button issues in a neutral way, prepared to look at any issue objectively and with the appropriate level of nuance. Parents should keep this in mind when deciding whether any kind of project or assignment is appropriate for their child. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.
Supply List
I will provide an individualized list to each student after the course of study is determined. All students should be prepared with any particular assignment they want feedback or guidance on for each session.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
2 Degrees
Master's Degree in Philosophy from Northern Illinois University
Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy from Illinois Wesleyan University
I have a BA in Philosophy with minors in Political Science and Greek and Roman Studies, as well as an MA in Philosophy with a concentration in Ethics and Political Philosophy. I’m the head coach of a competitive high school debate team and teach the liberal arts at a classical school. I’m also a professional creative writer and journalist.
I love helping students of all ages understand and interpret difficult subjects and learn how to crystallize their thoughts in writing and oral communication. I believe studying philosophy is a wonderful way to facilitate this kind of growth and learning.
