We are thrilled to introduce a new, immersive creative writing class designed to inspire and develop your child's writing skills. Our curriculum is filled with engaging lessons and practical strategies to help young writers flourish. Here's a sneak peek into our program: Diving into Plot Students will explore various methods of plot development, discovering which techniques best suit their storytelling style. They'll gain tools and strategies to enhance their plots throughout their writing journey. Creating Captivating Characters In this session, students will delve into character creation, learning to build memorable and relatable characters. They will work on crafting their own characters, whether new or existing ones. Dissecting Dialogue This unit focuses on the art of dialogue—understanding its purpose, what makes it effective, and common pitfalls to avoid. Students will collaboratively create dialogue to put their newfound skills into practice. Setting the Stage Students will learn the importance of setting in a story. We'll cover the key elements of building immersive settings, and students will develop their own unique story environments. This hands-on class teaches students to create vivid descriptions by engaging all five senses. They'll practice these techniques to bring their stories to life. Students will discover how to apply figurative language to enhance their writing, creating more vivid and imaginative worlds. A comprehensive introduction to the publishing world, this class covers the basics and guides students on how to find online publications and kid-friendly spots to publish their work. And Much More! Our program is designed to be comprehensive and dynamic, ensuring that each student finds their unique voice and style. Class Layout: First 15 minutes of class are sharing something about their week and what writing projects they are working on. Next 30-35 minutes of class are a lesson about some writing thing (character development, tone, figurative language, genres). Lessons would be part video/me explaining things and part writing exercises. For example, on a character development day we might go over the three major areas of character development (appearance, personality, background) and in between each one there is a corresponding mini-exercise that the kids can work on. By the end of class, they have a character to share. Or on a dialogue day, the basics of dialogue are taught more at once (with mini games to make sure skills are landing) and then there is a bigger exercise at the end where they write an exchange between characters to share with the class if they’d like. The last 5-10 minutes would be them sharing what they learned, wrote, or what they plan to work on in the next week. July 8-13 Diving into Plot: This lesson focuses on teaching the students different methods of plot development and helping them figure out which one works best for them. They will learn tools and strategies to help them with their plots throughout their writing journeys. July 14-21 Creating Captivating Characters: This lesson is all about creating characters that will stick with readers. Students will consider the different aspects of character building and work on a character of their own (old or new) as we work through this session. July 22-28 Dissecting Dialogue: This unit teaches students about dialogue: what makes it work, what to avoid, and what its purpose is in the grand scheme of a story. The class will collaboratively build a dialogue interaction to put these skills into practice. Setting the Stage: This class period focuses on setting and its importance to a story. I will go over the key pieces to building a setting and the class will follow along with their own settings (old or new). July 29-August 4 Using the 5 Senses: Here, students will learn about creating vivid descriptions. This class is very hands on, and students will learn some basics and then put them into practice. August 5-11 Figurative Language: This lesson teaches students how to apply figurative language to their stories and descriptions to build more vivid worlds and writing. All about Genre: This lesson explores a number of different genres and introduces students to areas of writing they may not have considered. August 12-18 Creating Realistic Relationships: This session looks at character from a different perspective: how they interact with other characters. This class teaches students how to create believable character interactions beyond dialogue. August 19-25 Publishing: This class is a publishing 101. There will be some content at the beginning about the publishing world, but the majority of the class focuses on how the students can start trying to get their work out there whenever they are ready. The class will teach them how to find online publications that fit their work and show them some popular kid-friendly spots to publish their work. The Vibes: This lesson is all about creating a mood and tone to a story. It goes over five key things to consider when creating the overall feeling to a piece. What To Do With Writers Block: This unit gives some useful tips and tricks to combat writers block. Students will leave this lesson having tools to use the next time they get stuck. Structure is a Tool: This lesson focuses on how some seemingly boring things, like paragraphs and sentence length, can be used to manipulate the way a piece is read. Of course there's plenty more where these came from! Topics will be updated as we progress.
