Writing the Worlds You Imagine I
Class experience
US Grade 7 - 10
This class is meant for you, the learners, to get to know me as a teacher/facilitator/guide and to see if I am a good fit for your learning needs and/or curiosities. This class lets you sample my teaching style while exploring your own imagination through creative writing. It is workshop-style, which follows these steps: 1) I guide you through a visualization of the world and people you want to create or are currently creating. No need to plan or have anything prepared, just come to class...
Students will most important walk away with a piece of writing they can work with, no matter how polished or "publishable" or whether or not it's "good" or "liked." Perhaps one day they choose to abandon it, but the goal is to exercise the imagination and begin to pull from it to create something. Learners also practice using sensory details, imagery, writing dialogue, and employing the five elements of literature (plot, character, setting, conflict, and theme).
I am a working writer and poet and have a background in creative writing. Mix this with my teaching English Language Arts, visual arts, EFL social-emotional learning, and yoga experience, and you get a dynamic and unique workshop.
Learners need to come prepared with a notebook, writing utensil, and an open and ready imagination.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I provide a safe and welcoming environment for students to explore what comes up and do not seek to censor. Writing in this way may bring up sensitive and controversial topics, all of which I am trained to manage through trauma-informed and restorative justice practices.
