Class Experience
Learning to write the five paragraph essay can be confusing and frustrating. By collaborating on an essay together as a class with the teacher as guide the students will face each step of the task together. A typically lonely task will become a group project. As each student lends their thoughts and ideas to each step they will see a good essay take form before their eyes—an essay they helped create. Students will improve the reading comprehension and learn that their ideas are valid. Students will gain a solid understanding of the five paragraph essay and their confidence as writers will grow.
Students will have approximately one hour of homework each week reading assigned chapters and completely writing assignments.
Each student will need a copy of "The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm" by Nancy Farmer. This can be purchased on Amazon in paperback or Kindle format (Kindle format can be read on the computer or a tablet).
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Assessment will come via verbal feedback during the class.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
