Class Experience

Students will learn to write a rough draft, edit their work, and finish a creative writing project. They will learn to identify and use active and passive voice, how to develop characters and write dialogue, and how to write effective descriptions.
I am an author, with books published in both fiction and non-fiction genres. I am also a professional artist. I consider words to be as much of an artistic tool as paint and brushes.

As a child, I loved to write stories and poems; I even enjoyed the writing assignments in school. In college, I studied psychology and biology, but I loved English so much that I took literature and creative writing classes just for the fun of it. I ended up with a degree in psychology with a concentration in English and biology. (Facepalm: I later discovered that I was just three credits shy of earning a degree in English, too.)

I have a deep love and respect for the power and potential of words. I am excited to help fellow word artists release their creative energy and use their words to change the world around them.
Students can work on their writing projects outside of class. This is not mandatory, but they can finish or refine a writing element in preparation for the next class.
Students will need a pen and paper or writing software on their computers. I will present the option of using free editing apps.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
There will not be an assessment.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
We will look at a free writing app called Grammarly and a collaborative writing tool called Gimkit Ink.
