Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner Level
In this multi-day course, students will practice their writing skills. This is an beginners class and we will go over subject, predicate, parts of speech, different types of sentences, and near the end we will write two-part sentences (independent and dependent clauses).

Below is a general outline of what will be covered. Students will have homework and if they turn it in to me completed, I am happy to review it with them. Many students do not return work to me so there is no way for me to go over it with them. If you would like feedback, the homework must be submitted.

Lesson 1: We will go over four different types of sentences: Declarative, Interrogative, Exclamations, and Commands. Students will need notebook paper and a writing utensil. Handouts may also be provided, please check the classroom page. After class, a review handout will be sent to the student for them to complete.

Lesson 2: We will begin with the basics of capitalization and go over eight different instances capitalization should be used when writing. Students will need notebook paper and a writing utensil. Handouts may also be provided, please check the classroom page. After class, a review handout will be sent to the student for them to complete.

Lesson 3: We will begin with the basics of punctuation. There are fourteen types of punctuation and we will cover four of them in this class. Students will need notebook paper and a writing utensil. Handouts may also be provided, please check the classroom page. After class, a review handout will be sent to the student for them to complete.

Lesson 4: We will review/learn nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs. Students will need notebook paper and a writing utensil. Handouts may also be provided, please check the classroom page. After class, a review handout will be sent to the student for them to complete.

Lesson 5: We will go over subject and predicate. Students will need notebook paper and a writing utensil. Handouts may also be provided, please check the classroom page. After class, a review handout will be sent to the student for them to complete.

Lesson 6: We will go over fragment and run-on sentences. Students will need notebook paper and a writing utensil. Handouts may also be provided, please check the classroom page. After class, a review handout will be sent to the student for them to complete.

Lesson 7: We will go over subject-verb agreement. Students will need notebook paper and a writing utensil. Handouts may also be provided, please check the classroom page. After class, a review handout will be sent to the student for them to complete.

Lesson 8: We will go over 1st, 2nd, 3rd, person sentences. Students will need notebook paper and a writing utensil. Handouts may also be provided, please check the classroom page. After class, a review handout will be sent to the student for them to complete.

Lesson 9: We will go over articles, conjunctions, and prepositions. Students will need notebook paper and a writing utensil. Handouts may also be provided, please check the classroom page. After class, a review handout will be sent to the student for them to complete.

Lesson 10: Application. Students will correct a piece of writing that I have provided using the skills they have learned in this class. Student will need notebook paper and a writing utensil. Handouts may also be provided, please check the classroom page. After class, a review handout will be sent to the student for them to complete.

Lesson 11: Application. Students will write an essay using the skills they have learned in this class. Student will need to complete and return to me prior to our next meeting so I have time to review it. We will also go over homework, answer questions, review, work through anything that needs to be gone over again. It also allows us more time for the application assignments to make sure students can put what they have learned together into a cohesive and coherent text.

Lesson 12: Left open for flex and review of material. This allows us to go over homework, answer questions, review, work through anything that needs to be gone over again. It also allows us more time for the application assignments to make sure students can put what they have learned together into a cohesive and coherent text.

My goal is to create a meaningful class where students grow in experience and confidence. I hope that students feel comfortable asking questions, and are encouraged in their writing.

This will assist students in improving their writing fluency; granting them a better overall composition and the ability to move through a paper smoothly. Students will move toward writing above grade level when using as they master these lessons.

Writing can seem overwhelming. By breaking down the writing process, using some simple tools and outlines, students will find success!

Students will have opportunity to ask questions and engage with other students.

This class will use a combination of lecture, powerpoint, handouts, interaction, and class participation for those who are comfortable with it, to assist students with learning.

Learning Goals

Students will learn the basics of a sentence structure including capitalization, punctuation, parts of speech, grammar.
