US Grade 5 - 8
In this four-week class, learners will learn how to create a "roadmap" for their 5-paragraph essays, and will successfully brainstorm, outline, and write an essay on a topic of their choosing. In class we will discuss how to effectively organize a 5-paragraph essay, from coming up with ideas to fully writing the paper. Class will consist of a combination of teacher lecture with visuals, demonstration, guided practice, and independent work. We will discuss their writing and students will receive feedback. By the end of the class, learners will have written a 5-paragraph essay and will be able to successfully organize their thoughts and writing for more essays in the future. Week 1: Introduction to the 5-Paragraph Essay / Brainstorming Ideas for an Essay Week 2: Creating the "Roadmap"- Outlining, Creating a Thesis Sentence, and Writing an Intro Paragraph Week 3: Following the "Roadmap" - Supporting Details and Writing Body Paragraphs Week 4: Reaching the Destination - Writing Conclusions and Checking for Organization

Hello and thank you for taking the time to learn a little bit more about me as an educator! I have been teaching students of all ages from little kiddos to middle school, high school, and adult learners for over 20 years in various capacities. I have a BA in English from Western Washington University, a Master in Teaching from Evergreen State College, and a Master in Transformative Language Arts from Goddard College. I've taught in juvenile detention centers and prisons, in traditional schools, in online programs, at community colleges, in daycares, and even as a homeschooling mom! I've also worked as a director for several different educational programs.
I believe strongly in the transformative power of language and its ability to create change both within us as individuals as well as within our communities and society. I love when I witness a student find just the right words to express how they feel or come alive as they read a poem to a class! In my teaching I encourage students to find their own voices and use those voices to write about what matters most to them. I believe in meeting students where they are at and developing learning from their existing passions. I think everybody has the ability to be a writer, even if they don't know it yet!
I look forward to working with you and engaging in fun and thought-provoking writing assignments!
