In this weekly poetry workshop, your middle school learner can write a poem while trying out a technique of a famous poet. New poems each week. Great for homeschooling and after school!

Class experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Students will learn poetic devices as well as read and discuss poems from poets all over the world. They will get the chance to write poems as well, applying the poetic devices and strategies and techniques taught in class. Students can join any time, each lesson is a stand alone lesson that each student can read and write from.
Hey there! I'm Ms. Kathie, a writer, poet, teacher and I love middle schoolers. I have taught this age group for the last 27 years. In my classroom, we used to have a poetry wall. I would like to recreate that poetry wall inside our Outschool Classroom posts!

I am certified in Middle and High School English and teach ELA Middle School, 9th grade ELA, Creative Writing classes and Canva classes here on Outschool. I'm also the published author of about 5 books with more to come along.

Notebook and pen/pencil or print off the PDF that I will include in the Outschool Classroom announcements each week. You might want to have different kinds of stationary or pens to decorate your poems. You are welcome to draw and decorate your poems.

The PDF will include a place to write about the poem of the week that I will share, brainstorming ideas for your poem, a blank thinking area to jot down ideas and rhymes, and then lined space for you to try writing your own poem. You can decorate this page as well, and I encourage you to take a picture of your poem and share it to our Outschool classroom!

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Some of the poems we may read are serious poems that have to do with depth of feeling and emotions. Although sometimes the subject matter may be about death or growing older, there will not be poems about suicide or attempts of such. I will also not include poems that are/seem to be about adult topics not appropriate for middle school aged children. I am listing all the poems I will be using in the course description above. Most of these poems appear in textbooks I have used throughout the years. You can Google any of these titles to vet them for your child. However, I will not censor poems about human rights and will be as inclusive as possible, according to Outschool policies, as long as the subject matter is middle school-aged appropriate.
Poetry foundation may be used (age appropriate content only)
