Welcome to "Writing Poetry: Using Imagery and Sensory Detail"! In this class, learners will participate in an interactive writing process that will help them develop and use vivid imagery and sensory detail to write a poem. Learners will be guided through a multi-step planning process in which they observe an ordinary scene (sitting wherever they are at the time of class, or recalling a vivid memory of a scene), and find the poetry in it! Ms. Kristin will help learners focus in on detail, light, sound, questions, and feelings related to the image. This class will be teacher-guided, and learner-directed. Teacher examples will be shown throughout class. Learners will participate throughout the process- sharing their writing and celebrating one another's poetic language! Everyone's ideas are respected and valued in a supportive atmosphere. Learners are asked to help one another generate ideas if someone feels stuck or confused. The activity can be easily adapted and adjusted to fit individual needs and appropriate pacing. Learners will be provided with a graphic organizer to help them organize their plan for writing. Learners are encouraged every step of the way, and Ms. Kristin will contribute however much or little help learners want in the development of poetic language. Creative writing can be intimidating. I believe in creating lessons and activities that make the process more accessible and enjoyable to learners of all ages by providing exemplars, opportunities for discussion, guided questions, helpful tips and tricks, enthusiasm, and encouragement. I hope to see your child in class soon!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there!
My name is Ms. Kristin, and I have been a teacher for 17 years! I have taught all ages, both abroad and in the US, in grades 1st through 5th. I have experience as an early childhood educator as well, with toddlers ages 2-4. I hold a current teaching license, and I have a Master's in Education. I enjoy teaching ALL subjects, using a multitude of learning modalities. Whenever possible, I love for my learners to engage in their learning using materials they can touch, taste, listen to, look at, and even move to! I strongly believe learning happens best when learners interact with the subject matter.
I look forward to teaching children about science through recorded science investigations and experiments conducted by me, virtual investigations and slide show presentations, as well as in-class research. I would like to teach learners strategies to determine reliable websites, primary vs. secondary resources, and tips and tricks for note-taking. Learners can share what they know, what they want to know, and what they have learned. I am quick on my feet and can easily adapt the direction of a lesson to better suit the needs and interests of my learners! Check out my "Science of Baking" class, where we bake a cake in a mug!
I also hope to support (or help create) a love of literature and writing through various writing lessons aimed to make reading and writing less intimidating and fun! I love reading and writing poetry. I enjoy teaching mini-lessons with multi-step exercises to assist learners in developing sensory details, knowledge of figurative language, and various elements of poetry writing. My "Having Fun with Figurative Language" class is sure to help learners sharpen their figurative language skills. For older kids, experimenting with rhyme scheme and meter are always fun (we're never too old for Shel Silverstein). Check out my "6 Room Poem" or "Where Poetry Hides" classes!
Sometimes a learner just needs a little extra support with phonics and fluency, or retaining English grammar rules, such as when and when not to use a comma. My "Grammar Tips and Tricks Series" covers all the bases of commas, and the power of punctuation, for learners ages 9-12.
I consider myself pretty crafty, and enjoy teaching kids various drawing techniques, needlepoint techniques, painting tutorials, and even dappling in digital art (fairly new to that one!). Stay tuned for a "Needlepoint and other Rainy Day Activities" class. I have been an early childhood educator as well, and hope to offer classes aimed at assisting Pre-K and Kindergartners develop their fine motor and gross motor skills through fun and interactive art projects!
I have lived and taught on three continents. I love adventure, and I enjoy infusing my instruction with adventure too! In my leisure time, I love to hike with my kids and dogs (Big Bear in my profile pic being one of them), sit by the lake with a book, craft, write, cook, and TEACH! I hope to see your child in class soon! :)
I am open to requests for classes and tutoring support as well! Feel free to contact me.
