US Grade 3 - 6
Are you looking to give your child the writing tools to be successful when it comes to paragraph writing? Could they benefit from small group instruction with 1:1 time mixed in to help develop and strengthen their writing abilities. If so, this is the perfect class for your child to grow as a writer. Join this course to learn about the key characteristics of paragraph writing. Your learner will learn and work to develop the skills needed to write a well structured paragraph. Key parts for the paragraph include: indentation, topic sentences, details, and an ending sentence. We also will learn and discuss why paragraphs are needed in writing. The course will run for 4 weeks, meeting once a week to work on paragraph writing. Each week will have a different writing topic/prompt to help us work through the steps to paragraph writing. We will also examine what a good paragraph looks like and sounds like so your learner can understand how their writing should look and sound. As we work each week, your learner will learn a variety of strategies for writing a hook, an exciting beginning sentence meant to grab the reader's attention as well as ways to end your paragraph. We will also touch on the different types of writing (narrative, opinion, descriptive, and how to). Your learner will have many opportunities to write and interact with other students. Our last meeting will focus on revising and editing and how to work through that process using a piece written in our course. The class will incorporate a variety of activities including writing prompts, breakout rooms, interactive "games", and much more! During breakout room time, your child will have time with other learners to brainstorm ideas as well as receive 1:1 check-ins and guidance about their writing. Meeting 1 - What is a Paragraph? -parts of a paragraph -identifying details vs. topic sentences -types of writing: descriptive, narrative, opinion, how to Writing topic: Someone I admire Meeting 2 Starting Strong - how to write a strong introduction -examining different types of hooks Writing topic: In my opinion, Meeting 3 - Details - adding details -using strong vocabulary -adding descriptions and adjectives Writing topic: My Favorite Object Meeting 3 - The End - how to write a concluding sentence Writing Topic: How To... Meeting 4 Editing and Revising - identifying the difference between edit and revise -work on editing and revising your own writing Writing Topic: Bring a piece from our class that we have completed to work on revising and editing Finally, I will provide a class challenge that is an optional activity for your child. It is meant to provide your child with additional writing practice based on the concepts taught that day. Parents can use this however they see fit and if your child completes the activity and you would like feedback, your child is invited to send the class challenge to me and I'll respond with writing feedback specific to your child. So come and join this fun and interactive class to learn about how to write a successful paragraph. Learning the structure of a well-developed paragraph is important so that your child can master this form and continue to put into practice this kind of writing! Please note: If you do not see a time/day that works for you, please let me know by completing a schedule request. I work hard to find something that is conducive to both our schedules. If you are part of a learning co-op or have friends/family that may want to do a class exclusively for you all, please send me a message. I am happy to create a private section at no additional cost to you. If you have any standards that you would like to specifically see addressed, feel free to reach out to me to see if they are covered in the class. If they are not, I can try to incorporate them into the course as long as they align with the outline of this class!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am looking forward to helping your child develop a well-written paragraph. I have taught in the classroom for over 12 years and also worked as an elementary school librarian for 4 years. I enjoy making learning fun and work to engage students in the learning process. My enthusiastic personality and ability to connect with all learners helps to create a positive learning environment. Providing opportunities for student voice and choice gives them ownership over their work. Additionally, with my Master's in Reading as well as my National Board Certification, I am always implementing best practices and literacy to my teaching! This is a great class to build the foundations for writing as a good paragraph can be applied to all subject areas.
