This class is an entire semester of writing instruction for middle school students. We cover everything from creative to informational, persuasive to research, and all the writing styles in between. Students will learn both basic and advanced writing skills, and will be given ample opportunity to practice their writing. Each week, students will have a different writing assignment that they work on in class to help them master a different writing modality. With each assignment will come...
Students will learn to write informatively, creatively, and argumentatively. Students will learn to create a thesis, conduct research, and support their thesis in writing. Students will gain independence in their learning through a self-led final project.
I am a licensed K-12 intervention specialist with my Master's Degree in Education and Special Education. I spent three years working in the public school setting and providing interventions in writing, reading, math, and life skills. I taught 7th grade writing for two years in an inclusion setting.
Students will be expected to complete regular homework, including: - Watching video mini-lessons when they are posted (5-10 minutes each) - Completing writing assignments not completed in class (30-60 minutes) - Sharing feedback through Nearpod when assigned (5-10 minutes). Students can expect to put 1-2 hours of work in each week outside of class.
Students will need something to write with - I prefer Google Drive/Google Docs for easy sharing and editing, but Microsoft Word works, as well.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
- Google Drive
Students will receive feedback on all assignments they turn in, and assignments will be graded according to a rubric. *This class is meant to help students develop academic independence. Students must take ownership of their learning by turning in all assignments they'd like feedback on.
1 hour 20 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Students are expected to complete work on time and submit it. I do accept late submissions (within reason) and always provide thorough and constructive feedback on assignments that are turned in. If a student does not hand in their assignments, I will not be able to provide feedback.

My greatest gift is the ability to explain things in a way that "clicks." Because of that, I teach a wide range of subjects that all share two common themes: (1) they are important skills that children can use throughout their lives, and (2) they...
