Class Experience

In this private class, students work one-on-one with an experienced writing teacher with the aim of developing students' writing skills and, most importantly, fostering a love for writing.
Contact me to discuss and to set up a class time.

The content of this class will be learner-directed and will vary depending on the needs of the learners and what skills students are working on developing. It is important to note that students learn at different rates; therefore, parents will receive messages detailing progress and what materials may be needed either before and/or after class.

I love all types of writing for so many reasons. It can boost imaginative thinking and help people see the world in another way. As well, it develops communication and problem solving skills. However, writing can be challenging; writing a story or poem that draws in readers and develops dynamic characters and themes takes a lot of work and understanding of writing techniques. Most professional writers spend hours upon hours writing and then even more time revising their work on their own and with trained editors. Thus, it is beneficial to seek help/feedback from others in order to become a better writer.

As a certified intermediate/senior English teacher who has taught writing for over 20 years, I love helping students develop their writing skills. This can include paragraph writing and/or writing creative pieces, including a novel, flash fiction, short stories and poetry. I have had some of my own work published and many of my students have won writing awards and had their pieces published as well.

Students taking this class can develop a variety of writing skills and choose what writing projects they'd like to work on/develop. If they are doing creative writing, they can either work with me to develop new work (stories or poetry or even a novel) and/or work on revising/editing work that they have previously written. I have plenty of resources to work with students at varying skills levels and ages. (For example, some learners may want to work on paragraphing skills or descriptive writing like adding more figurative language to their work, while another may be interested in working on developing a plot with more conflict or stronger themes. Or, some students might simply want some coaching on how to write a paragraph, novel, story or essay. )

One of the main goals of the class is for students to be able to identify their own strengths and weaknesses as writers as well as work on figuring out what writing process works best for them. This will allow students to improve their writing now and in the future.

Each class will begin with a greeting and introduction and then identify a goal to work on for the class. At the end of each class, students will identify their 'win' for the class -- what they are most proud of achieving in the class and what they learned about writing during the class.

My teaching approach will vary for this class depending on what each student needs. This class is discussion based, but will include slides (to appeal to visual and linguistic learners). The class may also include exercises and/or worksheets.

I am a very encouraging and positive teacher and I take every opportunity to maximize student engagement. Students taking this class are strongly encouraged to have their cameras on as it develops students' intrapersonal skills and I can more effectively teach and respond to students' non-verbal cues.

NOTE: This is an ongoing class so students can attend as many classes as they'd like to complete one or many writing pieces.

Please don't hesitate to reach out and request another time or date for this class.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their writing skills and work towards identifying their own writing strengths and areas for improvement.
