This is my half hour version. For a longer version, please see Writing Lab XL - 1 Hour Long This is a one on one writing lab to offer customized guidance and support. Writing is an essential skill that often gets short changed. In the interest of measurable results, educators and test developers tend to focus on mechanics of writing that can be scored objectively, such as grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Certainly, the mechanics are important for the clarity of a message. But writing is so much more than its requisite components. Writing requires executive function skills such as planning, organizing, and time management. Writing requires academic skills such as language, critical thinking, and problem solving. Writing well requires at least some level of intrinsic motivation to express oneself and this is where education, as an institution, often falls flat. It’s my job to make writing personally meaningful for my learners. I create engaging prompts I offer tips, tricks, and tools I nurture strengths I build confidence I help learners find and use their voice Topics will vary as needed. Potential topics include: Outlines, graphic organizers, and templates Finding, evaluating, and citing sources Spelling, grammar, punctuation Knowing your audience Common writing styles: informative, persuasive, creative, etc Common writing tasks: summaries, essays, research papers, etc AI: how to use AI appropriately for clarification, not creation How is this class different from my hour long class? This half hour class is more focused on skill development and tools during class and writing will occur outside of class.

Parental Guidance
It takes time to build the rapport necessary to make learning personally meaningful. It takes careful tact to encourage learners to “buy in” to the writing process. This will lead to more effective support, long term, so be patient.
If you have questions, please ask!
We will be using tools for clarification, for review, and for generating bibliographies when needed. The specific external resources listed are optional. They do not require users to create accounts. If you or your learner’s school have different preferred tools for those tasks, let me know.
