Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Hello and Welcome to Mr. G's Marvelous Writing Class - Introductions!

Writing is one of the greatest and essential ways to communicate, and I am excited to be offering a one time twenty minute class on writing introductions for academic or creative writing. One of the main challenges students sometimes will face in middle or high school is writing an amazing (knock your socks) introduction. In our class we will cover Mr. G's Model to introduction with an amazing hook or engagement (there are six to ten different methods for hooking the reader), unpacking or explaining the topic that aligns with the rest of the paper, road mapping topics for your reader, and thesis statements! The class will cover methods for hooking your reader like: Opening with a question, using data or statistics, quotes, telling a narrative story, paint a picture for the reader, start with a poem, using figurative devices (metaphor, simile, hyperbole, idiom, Onomatopoeia), alliteration, and/or leading your audience to the importance of the topic. Our class will also work creating amazing thesis statements (could be one or two sentences), and the main emphasis will be on creating claims plus premises to the thesis statement.

Structure of the lesson:
1. Start off with introductions - Mr. G is a published writer and podcaster who lives in Alaska of all places!
2. Discuss and learn about hooks and engagement methods.
3. Students will have a chance to practice coming up with some hooks and engagement methods.
4. Learn about leading the reader to the importance of the topic as well as unpacking and explaining the topic.
5. Learn about thesis statements by creating claims and premises.
