Writing a research paper is an invaluable skill in the study of history and the social sciences. In this class, students will develop a research paper in a small group. Students will benefit from teacher and peer feedback throughout their writing process. Students will have the option to meet with me one on one to discuss their research further. The student's research paper can be any length as long as it is enough to fully explore their topic. Pre Class: Student should decide what their desired topic is. Day 1: Assignment guidelines and brainstorming. -On the first day, we will discuss what a research paper is, what topics they are interested in. Students should bring at least one piece of research to class. Day 2: Thesis and Research -We will develop a thesis together and determine the focus of the research. -Students will ask one another questions about their topics so they may further refine their focus. -I will present and give out an outline they may use to organize their thoughts and research Homework: Students will submit their thesis before class. Students should begin crafting their outline and begin writing. Students should gather their research. Day 3: Citations and Structure -We will talk about APA citations, which are typical in the social sciences. Students will cite one of their pieces of research in class. -We will look at examples of research paper structures to get ideas, and talk about flexibility in writing Homework: Students will submit their cited research before next class.
