What's included
1 live meeting
1 hrs 20 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
History is an important part of understanding who we are today. It is hard for traditional classroom teachers to teach deeply about every event in history, so many are overlooked. In this class we will study a single event, The Raid on Richmond, then discuss what it might have been like to live through it, or be impacted by it. After discussion, each student will use the notes we have created to write a short story that is set in Richmond, Virginia during the events of the Revolutionary War. Students do not need to know anything about this topic before attending the class.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the basic history of the Revolutionary War, who Benedict Arnold was and why he led the Raid on Richmond.
WRITING:
After taking time for discussion we will brainstorm some of the interesting details that might spark fictional stories that students might want to explore as writers.
- Characters:
- Settings:
- Conflict:
- Resolution:
We will take time to write our stories, and then share with the group as time permits.
Students will be asked to write down questions that arise as they are writing for further independent research.

1 file available upon enrollment
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello,
My name is Lanica Klein and I am a media specialist from Minnesota. I have several areas I love to teach...and often I teach subjects outside what you would think of as 'library' skills. As a media specialist, I have been trained to help classroom teachers get the most out of their time. I've come to realize that classroom teachers (and I assume homeschool teachers as well) will never have enough hours in the day, days in the week, or weeks in the school year to meet all the 'required curriculum' they are handed.
I have become the teacher that asks, 'What can I do to help?' and move forward from there. So, feel free to ask if I am comfortable creating a class that you need if you don't see it here...I am willing to consider anything...and honest enough to let you know when it's beyond my skills.
In addition to traditional school subjects, I believe a lot can be learned from extra-curricular activities. I have run book clubs, coding clubs, a maker space and gaming clubs at various schools. Here, I have found a keen interest in Dungeons and Dragons, so I have opened up several classes, from Absolute Beginner to an ongoing campaign. Feel free to ask me any questions about any role-playing games if this interests you or your student(s).
EDUCATION AND WORK HISTORY:
I have undergraduate degrees in Theatre Arts and English. I also worked for a bookstore for a long time, before I earned my Masters of Library and Information Sciences (MLIS) and became a teacher. I currently hold a Minnesota K-12 Teaching License.
PERSONAL LIFE:
I have been married for about 25 years. We have identical twin 14-year-old sons, one of which has Autism (what used to be called Asperger Syndrome). I love taking pictures in my free time, especially in nature and State or National Parks. I am a Chicago Cubs fan. I love the Minnesota United Football Club (soccer) - called "The Loons". Above all, I love working with kids - Littles to Bigs. I enjoy watching students learn and grow...and helping them to become life-long learners.
