This class gives your student the ability to think critically through appropriate Social Emotional topics that correspond with age appropriate topics, poems and short stories that will help your student express themselves and feelings.

Grading
There will not be grades, however I will read what your child writes if they would like me too.

Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
Students will be given different short stories, poems to read and we will discuss as a group.   Writing can be a useful tool to help make sense of feelings and learning to express ourselves. This class will help students build confidence and social skills.

Short story Teacher Led Week- There are no wrong answers in here. I want to hear your opinions and what you have to say! We will read together the short story "The Silent Struggle"- A Bully's Redemption-You can choose one of the writing prompts listed for your short story or to help with your analysis writing.

Poems Teacher Led Week- We will read through and discuss this poem. This week you will analyze this poem.The Mask By: Shel Silverstein

Essay Topics: Teacher Led Week we will discuss an essay together- Possible Persuasive Topics-*Going to school all year long * Discuss a Characters development in a story why or why not* Should kids start learning to drive at younger ages? *Should video games have an age limit? 
Other topics: Weather, Favorite Present, Favorite Holiday, Riding a bicycle, Favorite Pet, Candy, Ice Cream, Favorite Family member, Colors, Movies, Video Games...

The class breakdown will look like this...

*The first 3 weeks of this class will be teacher led. Each Monday I will introduce a Short story, Essay or Poem & students will have a week to analyze the material and we will discuss it on Friday as a group. Fridays will be student led to help foster autonomy and confidence in your student!

*Wednesdays- I will post a check in Post in the classroom to see how things are going- I may post added slides or videos today to help inspire my writers. 

* The last 3 weeks, Students will meet on Mondays and discuss their topics they choose for each assignment. Each student will write a Short story, Essay and Poem and share their work on Fridays. (No student HAS to share)

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to express themselves and feelings through writing.

 Students will give opinions on the readings, essays, poems, etc. Using writing as an outlet in this form can help students use writing in other platforms such as emotion expression in private. Students will learn to look at more than one point of view in writing, hear the opinion of others, and work with others in a group setting.

This class can accommodate all learners and learning styles. Please let me know if your learner has any specific needs and I will do my best to accommodate your child's needs. There is no specific requirement for writing ability
Parental Guidance
This class is not a therapeutic class. It should not be used to replace mental health help in any way. This class is not a mental health group. This class is not a English class meant to grade students on their grammar or quality of writing. This class is for expression and outlet, more for Art expression and use as a coping skill.

I am a licensed clinical social worker, certified clinical trauma professional and have my masters in social work. I have worked in an inpatient hospital setting with adolescents unit, private practice setting and therapeutic day high school writing curriculum and IEP goals for many years.
