This is a club that meets twice a week for writers to talk through ideas, find inspiration and support, and workshop their writing. It is open to writers of all genres and all levels of experience. At the first meeting of each week, learners may discuss ideas and the writing process, respond to writing prompts, play writing games, discuss their inspirations, and pose questions to their peers. I will structure this meeting based on learners' interests and may bring in prompts, poems or...
Students will learn to give supportive, constructive feedback. They will also practice writing skills and learn new techniques (chosen based on the students' interests).
I have experience tutoring students of all ages in personal narrative, persuasive, and creative writing. I have also worked in the literary departments at the Goodman Theatre and Court Theatre, where I evaluated and offered feedback on scripts by professional playwrights. I have also worked with student writers as a co-director and dramaturg in Arena Stage's Voices of Now program. I also taught literature courses and one creative writing and literature course at the Great Books Summer Program.
Writing between classes is encouraged, but students may write as much or as little as they would like. Students will, in most cases, be expected to read their peers' writing before a workshop so that they can offer feedback. I'm expecting this to be in the range of 2-8 pages each week, but we may adjust this based on students' needs.
Students will need paper and a pen/pencil, or will need to be able to type a document while staying in the Zoom meeting. Writing that is shared with the group for feedback must be typed.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
