Description

Class Experience

Students will learn the essential elements of personal writing from topic selection through introspective reflection. Personal writing is rarely taught as formal instruction in schools and these skills are not inherent. Students will be taught to find a balance in implementing imagery, writing action, and reflecting on the world around them, all while maintaining clarity by following the conventions of English.
I have been teaching English Language Arts courses for 18 years in rural and urban settings. I currently teaching in a public high school in Manhattan, NYC where I teach 9-week Memoir course.
After Session 1, students will finish writing a draft of their essays and will read student exemplars as models.

After Session 2, students will revise their essays and email the teacher (optionally) for two additional rounds of feedback.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
All feedback is individualized. Each student will receive peer feedback during the second session. Also, each student will receive two rounds of written individual feedback from the teacher with positive notes and comments (if using Google Docs) or track changes (if using Microsoft Word) on how to improve the essay.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
