Students will be taught how to adapt the fairy tale 'The Princess and the Pea' using key texts by a range of authors. They will learn how to turn a story into a story map and then how to create adaptations using the story map as a starting point. Day 1: Read the Vera Southgate and Rachel Isadora versions, map it out, create a simple script to learn by heart, verbally re-tell the story adding actions. Day 2: Read 'La Princesa and the Pea' and 'The Cowboy and the Black-Eyed Pea'. Compare and contrast the different versions of the story, what elements have changed? Decide which element they want to change in their own version. Create a story map with the changed elements. Verbally re-tell our own stories to the group using actions, write a first draft of the story. Day 3: Dig into our descriptive writing toolbox: adjectives, adverbs, show-not-tell, personification, similes, metaphors, alliteration etc. Improve upon our first drafts and edit our stories. Day 4: Read our Princess and the Pea fractured fairy tales to each other, give kind and helpful feedback.
