Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 3
Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this course, students will learn how to create simple, compound and complex sentences. They will work through 8 lessons introducing new grammar and correct terminology. By the end of the 8 lessons, students should feel more confident in creating different types of sentences to inform their writing. You will need a writing book/paper and pencils/pens to write with.

I have structured the classes so that they have bite-sized pieces to gradually build upon student knowledge.

These lessons are self-paced. I have created PowerPoints so you can pause at relevant times to allow time for the student to participate at their own pace. There are examples and guidance within the presentation.

Within my teaching style, I like to ensure that the instruction is transparent. Therefore, I use student-friendly terminology, pace appropriately, and provide many examples to allow ease of understanding. I find that this enhances student confidence and gives them that 'have a go' attitude, which is so important for their academic growth.

Students will be presented with slides, which I will speak over to maximise instruction and student understanding. They will create their sentences using pictures and familiar items around them. Examples and guidance will be prevalent throughout.

Learning Goals

By the end of the course, students should be able to write a variety of sentences, using correct punctuation and correct terminology to inform their writing.

Syllabus

8 Lessons
over 8 Weeks
Lesson 1:
What makes a good sentence?
We will look at the different sentences (simple, compound and complex) that will be looked at in future lessons and break down what it takes to create a good sentence. By the end of this lesson, students should be able to create simple sentences with correct punctuation.
Lesson 2:
Nouns and Adjectives
In this lesson we will look at objects around us and begin to use the correct terminology of nouns and adjectives. We will then describe the nouns using the adjectives. By the end of this lesson, students should be able to create simple sentences using nouns and adjectives with correct punctuation.
Lesson 3:
Verbs and Adverbs
In this lesson, we will look at verbs and adverbs. Using objects around us and pictures, students will begin to think about how to increase their basic sentences from previous lessons to start adding more interest with verbs and adverbs. By the end of this lesson, students should be able to create a sentence with a noun, adjective, verb and adverb, using correct punctuation.
Lesson 4:
Adding more detail, such as where and when.
Building on our sentences from previous lessons, we are looking at how to add a little more into our sentence to make it more interesting. Structuring is important and using correct grammar, we will create a sentence that sounds correct and not displaced. By the end of this lesson, students should be able to draw upon their previously learned skills to put together a grammatically correct sentence using parts of speech.
