Beginner Level
In this ongoing class, the students will work on writing during each class. At the beginning of class the students will get a new topic and we will discuss the steps needed to do that activity using first, next, then, last. How would you teach someone else to do that task? The students will then write one or two sentences for each step. When the writing is complete, the students will share their stories, if they feel comfortable doing so. I will give the students a choice of topics to write about. Depending on the class and the seasons, some topics we may choose to write about are: How to make lemonade How to jump into the water How to eat watermelon How to plant a seed How to eat ice cream How to throw a water balloon How to hopscotch How to make a hotdog How to rake leaves How to wrap a package How to swim underwater How to make a S'more How to fly a kite How to read a book How to throw a football How to be a good friend Other possible topics: How to make a snowman How to get ready for bed How to cut out snowflakes How to make a paper airplane How to eat an Oreo How to make a snow angel How to blow up a balloon How to cut paper hearts How to ride a bike How to make a pizza How to ice skate How to tie your shoe How to brush your teeth

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! Welcome to my Outschool classroom. My name is Betty Nilssen. I have a BS in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish from UW-Milwaukee. I am a first grade teacher, but I have also taught second, third and fourth grade. My passion for teaching reading while incorporating phonics, phonemic awareness, rhyming, comprehension, fluency, science, social studies, math, drawing and writing helps children strengthen their academic skills while they gain academic confidence and a love of learning. Teaching reading is my super power.
However, I incorporate math, writing, social studies and science into all of my lessons, as well.
I have three adult daughters and two of them are teachers, as well.
There are so many books to read, words and sentences to write, math equations to solve and fiction and non fiction pictures to draw. Let's get started! Use code: BettyNi2020 at checkout to try your first class and get $20 off. Enroll your Early Childhood Education student and your child will further develop their academic skills and gain academic confidence. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or if you are looking for different times or dates for classes.
I can't wait to work with you and your child! Mrs. Nilssen
