Writing an Informative Essay: A Course for Pokémon Professors

Calling all Pokémon professors! In this 10-week course, learners will will take on the role of a Pokémon professor who specializes in the relationships between Pokémon and humans. Their friend’s podcast needs help educating listeners on jobs involving Pokémon, other than becoming a trainer. I've taught in public schools and for a virtual private school. The course is adapted from a unit I did with my virtual students. Not only have I put a Pokémon spin on the unit, but I made slight changes to better aid students' progress. I’ve been a Pokémon fan since my childhood. I enjoy finding ways to incorporate Pokémon to help students access the content, and I believe students enjoy it too!
Homework Offered
Throughout the course, students will work on their informative essay. See the “Class Experience” section for a lesson-by-lesson break down. Any work that is not completed during class will be homework.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students do receive my feedback on their rough drafts. A project rubric is provided to familiarize learners with rubrics. Upon request, I am happy to provide a rubric-based grade on a learner’s final draft.Grades Offered
All necessary supplies will be provided in Google Classroom. These include PDF articles for learners’ research, a PDF Project Guide, and a .docx master worksheet.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learners will access the course materials and submit assignments through Google Classroom. A Google account is required to access Google Classroom. Learners are not able to post or comment in Google Classroom. Lessons 1 and 10 will use Kahoot. Lesson 9 will use Padlet. During Lesson 9, learners will be sent a link to a Padlet where they and a classmate can anonymously peer review their essays. Learners do not need an account to access Padlet.
