We will be learning how to use the 5Ws (Who, What, When, Where, and Why) to stretch or expand simple sentences. A three word sentence can most certainly provide the reader with information. However, this kind of sentence can also be a bit on the dull side. We will learn how to add details to our sentences and fill them with style and interest. Homework goes from boring to fun and exciting! Students should come to class with the ability to write a complete simple sentence like "The dog runs." The class is designed to be interactive, meaning each student will have the opportunity to engage with the teacher as well as with fellow students. We will use lots of visual aids in the form of slides and video/audio clips to help stir up creativity. Along the way, we will also review parts of speech, as well as the components of a complete sentence. My teaching style is structured but in more of a facilitator fashion. I work hard to help students realize their own potential and abilities and take ownership of their learning.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their ability to write descriptive sentences using the 5Ws.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Greetings! I am a freelance educator and a graduate of Spelman College and Georgia State University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Child Development and went on to complete graduate degrees in School Psychology. Over the past six years, I have accumulated over 10,000 hours of online TESOL instruction with English language learners as far away as China, Taiwan, and Japan. I also have 10 plus years of experience as a K12/Higher Education content and assessment writer. I have 21 years of overall teaching experience and have taught at both the public and private school levels here in the United States, with a K-5 primary concentration. I am also a dedicated homeschooling parent.
My homeschooling experience began in 2004. I have taught all subjects to our children when they were in the early grades and now serve as the learning coach to our middle and high school aged children. Our oldest son recently graduated college with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. Our second oldest son is now an Applied Physics dual degree engineering college student. I hope to use what I have learned through homeschooling to help others.
While I can teach a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about reading, writing, ESL (English as a Second Language), STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics), and study/organizational skills. I also offer homework and project assistance and hold unique classes on topics like crocheting, hair-braiding, cooking, and beginning gardening. I truly see helping people gain success as learners as a unique and rewarding experience and intend to work hard to inspire each student that I work with to nurture a life-long love of learning. I personally enjoy learning through books, music, nature, people, animals, photography, and much more.
It is all about making connections with others through our interests and life-experiences. I have seen firsthand how through diligent and compassionate work, educators can help to bring about a positive change not only in a child's life, but in families, communities, and ultimately the larger world. Helping young people to grow into their greatness is incredibly rewarding. I hope to work with you soon!
