I will return papers with both positive and constructive feedback, not a letter grade. Students will be writing from a checklist, so students and parents will know exactly what is required for each assignment.Grading

Beginner Level
This is the first class of a 2-part course on writing using the All Things Fun and Fascinating curriculum from IEW. By taking both the Part 1 and Part 2 classes, students will cover most of the lessons in the book. ------------------------------------------------------------- Literature is diverse! Whether enjoying a fable or short story or reading facts about animals, there is always something interesting to learn. As you are introduced to diverse pieces of writing, learn how to take notes, re-tell stories, summarize references and learn to write poetry in this Part 1 class. Because this curriculum is sequential and builds upon a structure, we will cover the first 4 units of the IEW methods before moving into part 2 of the course, offered after this course is completed. Each week during class, students will interact with the teacher and other students to practice building on writing skills through modeling in the required book, discussion, and/or short games. The games may use the chatbox, on-screen annotation, and verbal exercises. All activities will reinforce the concepts of both writing style and writing structure. Throughout these lessons, we will be playing with words to "dress-up" our writing, using descriptive adjectives, strong verbs, adverbs, sentence openers, figurative language, vocabulary, and more to add interest. Lessons & Structures covered will include: Week 1: Asteroids, Rafflesia, Seeds (introduction to a key word outline, notes, and oral presentations to practice using our own words) Week 2: Neil Armstrong on the Moon, Vitamins, Sea Horse (key word outlines and oral presentations to use our own words) Week 3: Fable: Belling the Cat (writing from outlines, using strong verbs) Week 4: Fable: The Crow and the Peacocks (writing from outlines; quality adjectives and -ly adverbs) Week 5: Fable: The Ant and the Grasshopper (writing from outlines; sentence openers and alliteration) Week 6: Damocles and the King (retelling a narrative story) Week 7: The Little Dutch Boy (retelling a narrative story; who/which clauses) Week 8: Pecos Bill (retelling a narrative story; similes and hyperboles) Week 9: Borrowing a Conflict (writing an original story) Week 10: Bever Lodges (Topic Sentence and Conclusion Sentences) Break Between Part 1 and Part 2 Classes: Optional Focus on Holiday Poetry and either Swiftlet Nests and/or Honeybee Hives Vocabulary and literature suggestions will be given so students can use these to connect to their writing. No prior experience with IEW is required.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their writing style through the use of dress-ups, along with outlining, paragraph writing, and story writing, as they use source texts and pictures for reference.
