Average rating:4.9Number of reviews:(239)
Learn the basics of writing an undergraduate-level research paper from Thesis Statement to Conclusion, along with the research and organizational skills needed to write one.

Class experience

This course will cover a number of concepts and skills related to academic research and writing.

Students will learn how to:
- Craft a "Research Question."
- Answer their "Research Question" with a clear "Thesis Statement."
- Use database search tools and best practices (e.g., Google Scholar, Boolean Operators).
- Identify (and differentiate between) "Primary Sources" and "Scholarly Sources."
- Write a "Source Analysis" summarizing and comparing a "Primary Source" and a "Scholarly Source" in the context of their "Research Question."
- Create (and properly format) an "Annotated Bibliography."
- Create and utilize a "Reverse Outline" to prepare and organize their paper.
- Edit a "Rough Draft" into a "Revised Draft."
- Practice proper "Peer Review" etiquette.
- Provide effective feedback to others and incorporate others' feedback into their own work.
- Identify strategies to avoid plagiarism and other types of academic dishonesty.
This course is a variation of the First-Year Composition course I taught at George Mason University. I taught multiple sections of the course for several semesters and received excellent feedback and ratings from students. Since then, I have successfully coached hundreds of high school students through the academic writing process in a variety of contexts.
