Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Students will meet with the teacher to work on individual novels. During this time, students will work on developing dynamic and complex characters, settings, timelines, and more. We will work through descriptive writing and dialogues.

As this is a ***workshop course*** students can expect to write in class. All students work on their writing in class, so often times many students will be working independently and quietly on their own as I meet with each student multiple times independently on their own stories. Students are encouraged to listen to music or participate in other activities that help them focus on their work!

Each week will be a different focus with students working on their own individual novels while learning the skills and techniques to craft a novel or short story.

The class will have many mini-lessons which will be provided based on individual needs:
     - Timelines and Cohesive Storylines
     - Descriptive Writing
     - Developing an Engaging Setting
     - Special Punctuation and Circumstances of Use
     - Writer's Block
     - Developing Complex and Dynamic Characters
     - Symbolism and Other Literary Elements
     - Twists! Surprises! And More!

*** Disclaimer: It is VERY helpful if your student uses Google Documents/Google Drive. While we can work with other programs, Google allows us to share the document. This means that as you type, I can provide feedback directly on your writing in live time. This also allows me to upload and share resources with you in a quicker fashion than other programs allow. All documents (story, resources, and anything else in the folder) belong to you. I do not keep any of it so that we maintain the authenticity and privacy of your writing! ***

In addition to teaching professionally at the middle school and high school level in English, I have specifically taught classes on analyzing writing and its purposes. This was accompanied by how to write these as well. I am also working on writing my own novel and am collaborating with my husband and sister on writing children's stories.
