Students need to come prepared for class with their topic, main ideas, and details ready to go. If a student is not finished with the essay, they can finish at home and feedback will be given on the finished essay, however I have found most do best if they work in class. Students can take more than one week per essay if needed. If assistance is needed student can message the teacher. If parents want the students to work outside of class, they can let me know.Assessment
Teacher will provide feedback on writing. This is done during class as they are writing or done with editing comments on the paper.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
This is an ongoing essay class which focuses on constructing and writing 6 paragraph essays, which includes an introduction, a conclusion and 4 main idea/details paragraphs. Students need to be able to come to class with a topic, 4 main ideas, and 4 details about the main idea. The first class a student comes to, I will work with them on the process and evaluate where they need help or further instruction. Students also need to have basic typing skills as we will me using google drive to work on the essays. Students can stop or start at any time and it is not dependent on attending previous weeks. Students can message me if they need assistance. I also will be available via Outschool message for any questions during the week. This class will meet 2 days per week. I will post a link to an online graphic organizer to the classroom before their first class when they join, then as they finish an essay, I will give them another graphic organizer. The first day we will work on putting those onto a graphic organizer. Students can get ideas from the teacher if they are struggling. I will check with each student to see if they have this part of the process completed. The second day we will take the graphic organizer and make paragraphs, which include transition sentences. The students then add in an introduction and conclusion. Once they have that done, they will read over them, making any edits. The teacher will also give feedback. If anyone is not able to finish during class, they can finish before the next week, and if needed during the next class. I will be able to see any changes and offer suggestions. Some may take longer, learning the process is more important than the pace. Once students know the process, they can work outside of class if they wish, and at that point parents can request students spend time outside the class working on their essays. It is suggested they pick something they really know a lot about. Students can follow home rules to find information they need. They need to know how to put it in their own words. The class is about writing fluency, not teaching how to research. I have found, just like reading, the more a student practices, the easier it is and they are able to build more skills as they go. They do need to be able to type well enough to work on the google doc, but they do not have to be fast, it will just take them longer to complete. I keep my class size set so I can give individual attention, and I try to keep my classes affordable for parents. Each week will operate the same, and because the student will chose and bring the topic to class, there is no set weekly topic schedule. M-W classes: Monday: Students will use the information they bring to class and make an graphic organizer, including an introduction and conclusion. Wednesday: Students will use the graphic organizer to write a 6 paragraph essay which includes an introduction, conclusion and transitional sentences. They will edit their papers and teacher will provide input on the finished work. If students do not finish at the end of the 2nd class, they can finish outside of class, or continue the next class period. Each student can work at their own pace, so if they come mid-week, miss a class, or just need more time, they can work the process at their pace. If parents want students to have homework, they can request it. T-Th classes Tuesday: students will use the information they bring to class and make a graphic organizer, including an introduction and conclusion. Thursday: Students will use the outline to write a 6 paragraph essay which includes an introduction, conclusion and transitional sentences.
Learning Goals
Each student will produce a 6 paragraph essay each week, including an introduction, conclusion, and transitional sentences.
Other Details
Learning Needs
The class uses google docs as we construct the essays, this is very helpful for those with learning differences. Every student works at their own pace. I can work with the family on how to help specific needs.
Pre-Requisites
Students need to be able to type on a google doc. I DO NOT allow handwritten essays. The essays are 6 paragraphs long, so they need to have ideas for 4 main ideas and details.
Supply List
Students will need to have ideas described above ready to go. It is important for each student to have ability to type and share during the class, so sharing a device for this class will not work.
