Writer's Workshop for Budding Writers
This will be an 10 week class where we will learn how to write fiction and non-fiction works. Students will learn how to use and practice literary devices and different styles of writing.

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner - Advanced Level
This class will be taught as a collaborative writer's workshop. It will be student lead but scaffolded by the teacher. We will cover literary devices, writing styles, character and scene development, and editing techniques. Classes will have discussion with some lecture and students will apply techniques reviewed in class and outside of class. At the end of the class, students will have some of their own works to add to a writing portfolio.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their creative writing through brainstorming, outling, grammar improvement, writing in various genres, and refining writing techniques.

Descriptions
We will learn to use personification and other literary devices to give a rich description of a person, animal, or object.

Lesson 2:
Setting a scene
We will set a scene by learning how to create settings in stories. using imagery to add rich detail to texts.

Lesson 3:
Personal Narrative
We will create a personal narrative and learn about writing from different points of view: 1st, 2nd, 3rd person.

Lesson 4:
Fairy Tale Pastiche
We will create a pastiche (an literary work that borrows from another from famous fairytales. Students may decide which one they want to recreate, the time period they want, the country (even out of space), and who the characters are.

Other Details
Pre-Requisites
Students should have basic skills in English grammar at least at the high school level. If there are some grammatical issues that need to be fine tuned, we can do that in class. This class is about fun.
Supply List
Student will only need to use a thesaurus (online or physical copy) and a dictionary. Students should have a google docs and google drive account so that I can send corrections to students of completed assignments.

We will use literary texts as examples of how different styles of writing is used. Most of the pieces will be from classical literature. All content will be rights free.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have two degrees in French Literature, Language, and Culture. In my literature courses, I have written literary criticism as well as written poetry and short stories. I have taught literature in English and in French to students in the US and in France. During my tenure as a middle school teacher, I taught electives in creative writing to eight graders where we worked on writing techniques and we collaboratively wrote a book as a class.
