This lesson introduces your Writing Mentor, Jonny Walker. Jonny will explain how this course might help you to 'find yourself' as a writer - to trust your ideas, and to experiment in our writing laboratory. 1 x Video

Know Yourself As A Writer
This lesson will focus on making a short biography of your interests, expertise and life experiences. This biography will become the 'source material' for lots of your writing in future sessions. 4 x Video 1 x Notesheet

Lesson 3
The Power of Poetry Part 1: Poetry That Rhymes
This lesson is all about what poetry is. We will explore how rhyming poetry works in different ways. We will look at the examples of rhyming verse, limericks and nonsense poetry. 4 x Video 3 x Notesheet
Lesson 4
The Power of Poetry Part 2: Poetry That Doesn't Rhyme
This lesson looks at poetry beyond rhyming! We will explore anecdotal free verse poetry, acrostic poetry and the wonderful French form, the cinquain. 4 x Video 3 x Notesheet

Personal Essay Writing: How To Be Clear and Fresh
This lesson looks at the different reasons we might need to write an essay. The focus is on developing clarity in our sentences and paragraph structures. Fiction: The Art of the Storyteller
This lesson explores different kinds of fiction writing. We will learn that different kinds of fiction might need different kinds of storytelling, but that good writers break as many rules as they follow. What makes us want to keep on reading a story? 4 x Video 1 x Notesheet
Lesson 7
Fiction Masterclass - Creating Believable Characters
This lesson is a one-off writing exercise that encourages you to create characters who are - in some way - 'a bit of you'. This helps us to understand ourselves as writers, but also allows us to write with empathy. 1 x Video

Non-Fiction: Facts, Well-Told
This lesson is about different kinds of non-fiction writing - factual writing does not need to be written in boring ways. Non-fiction can also be a way of showing lively voice, expression and humour. We will look at how we can write about our specialist interests in different ways. 5 x Video

Lesson 9
Speechwriting - The Power of Persuasive Words
This lesson is about speechwriting - creating words that are designed to change people's minds, to shift opinions and to persuade people. We will look at the classical techniques of rhetoric and persuasion, and use them to create a persuasive speech. 4 x Video
Lesson 10
The Final Lesson - Celebrating and Publishing
This session is about celebrating what we have achieved across the course and sharing ideas of how you can keep on developing your writing. We will look at ideas of how to share your writing, make it meaningful and find ways of building up an audience. There is a Certificate for you to download. 1 x Video 1 x Certificate of Completion

I am a qualified teacher with 13 years experience in the classroom, teaching in London, England. In the last five years, I have been working as a specialist writing teacher in East London schools, specialising in creative writing, mythology and poetry.

I am a children's writer myself, and have nine books that have been published, with nine more currently 'in press' with the publishers.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
All of my class content and video content is age-appropriate.
