Arabic - there are many reasons to study this incredibly rich and complex language, but one of them is definitely the script: Arabic calligraphy is a millennia-old art whose beauty lies in its elegant simplicity. In this one-time class, we’ll first learn a bit about the Arabic alphabet, which is written from right to left. Then, it’s time to start reading our first words in Arabic! My method of breaking up words into units of sound will allow students to start recognizing letters quickly. Particular attention will be paid to difficult sounds that do not exist in English. In the last part of class, I will show each learner how to write their name in Arabic and give them a chance to practice a few times on their own before presenting their best attempt to the class. No prior knowledge of Arabic is needed. I like to keep things as interactive as possible by showing visuals, drawing on the screen, and eliciting answers from learners. If your student is a bit shy and prefers not to be called on, that’s no problem - just let me know in advance. Please bring a pencil and some paper to class :) * * * Copyright info for image in thumbnail: “Arabic alphabet” by Inselleben https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arabic_alphabet_da-za.png + https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arabic_alphabet_ayn-ghayn.png
