This course is for beginners, students who have no experience or extremely limited experience in writing cursive. In this course, we will use letter guides/workbooks, youtube videos, information from blogs that I subscribe to, and as well as materials that I have developed. I will distribute materials that the students need prior to class. The material will be physical materials, materials that can be downloaded and printed for the students to use. There will materials that can be...
The students at this level can write in cursive but are developing their confidence so that their writing is second nature. We will work on developing their confidence by having the students work on writing tongue twisters and short passages from their favorite books. Tongue twisters are great for a few reasons, but in connection with writing it provides practice for the students to write the same letters, upper case, and lower case, connect the letters to other letters, and write actual sentences. Their favorite passages would provide the same practice. This will also help them see how much space they should allow between words, how high the upper- and lower-case letters will be in relation to the line. In addition, I would also include sensory, fine, and gross motor skills as part of the lesson. I have worked with an occupational therapist who has convinced me that these skills are an important part of writing. It is a good idea to develop strength in a person's hand so they can write for long periods of time. At the end of the six weeks, the students writing, and skill development should show an improvement.
I would suggest that each student practice their handwriting at least 15 minutes a day.
Materials: playdough, two-gallon plastic bags that will seal at the top, two-quart size bags that seal, pencil or pen with an eraser, markers, a light color high lighter, two pieces of heavy paper, and glue. I will provide a workbook, homework booklet, practice sheets, and other materials as necessary. Please print off the materials prior to each class and print off the homework booklet after each class.
I will ask that each student upload their work to my Outschool email so I can look at it by the next day. I will return it within 72 hours to the students in like manner. An assessment will accompany their work with comments to help them improve their writing. This is voluntary on the student's part as I know they are busy.
1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
I use YouTube videos from the OT closet
