Write & Publish Semester Course - Stories From Oz: Write a New Multi-Voice Book!

In this 20-week creative course, students will explore the classic Wizard of Oz story from different perspectives and collaborate to write and illustrate short stories to be compiled into their own publishable book.

Class Experience

The students will improve their close reading, critical thinking, creative thinking, organizational, and project management skills, as they dive into creative writing, visual art, and book design. At the same time, they will be practicing their communication skills as they work collaboratively with the other students.
Prior to each each class, the students must read the chapters for that lesson and select any details that describe the focus character and their experience.

Much of the work will be done in class, but each student is responsible for finishing up their part of the project during the week, as well as reading the chapters in preparation for the following week.

This novel is in the public domain, so there is no need to purchase it for our class. I will provide the readings in our classroom each week. We will also use Google Docs and Blurb's Bookwright. Each student must be able to access both of these free programs. Bookwright should be downloaded and installed on the student's computer.
While there is no formal assessment tool for this course, I will be giving spelling, grammar, and stylistic writing advice to our young writers during the class and later in the week.

I will also provide updates on their performance, including anecdotical examples or writing samples.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
This classic story is is quite gentle, but there is reference to slavery, witches, and several animal attacks.
