Class Experience

This class will provide students with in-depth information on the six most common forms of essays: Argumentative, Expository, Narrative, Compare and Contrast, Reflective and Literary Analysis.
These six types of essays will be fundamental in growing the writing ability of students. The first week will be spent covering the basics of essay writing: How to write Introduction Paragraphs, Body Paragraphs, and Conclusion Paragraphs. Students will also learn common essay outline formatting, how to write thesis statements and to properly format quotes in their essay. Each week will be spent learning about each different type of essay. Students will receive a lesson at the beginning of the class learning about the basics each type of essay should have. Students will be provided a Guidelines handout that includes the essential elements of each type of essay. The class will then look at a sample essay and discuss the elements. For homework each week, students will be given a sample essay to read. They will be required to answer two questions based on the essay. Additionally, students will be given a chance to practice their writing skills each week! Students will choose one portion of the essay to rewrite and improve. The answers to the questions will be posted in the classroom to allow for a class discussion. For two weeks, students will also practice writing mini narrative and analytical essays. After learning about each different type of essay, students will be able to choose their favorite type and write their own! They will be able to choose from any of the six essay formats and choose any topic of their choice. The last week of class will be spent showing an essay checklist, rubric and completing a class quiz. Students will have an additional week to submit their final draft of their essay.
