Description
Class Experience
Students will learn the common fears writers face, how to confront those fears, and how to write through the blockages to writing those fears create. By the end of the course, students will have written a passage of fiction, creative nonfiction, and a poem.
I'm offering this class as a way for students to banish writer's block and write freely and honestly. Personally I have faced many fears as a writer of several novels and a deeply transparent memoir. I know how to dig deep as a writer and move beyond what seems too scary or too secret to write. Brave writing is powerful, moving writing and I want to inspire this kind of power in emerging writers.
No homework is required for this course, but students are encouraged to continue writing on their own.
A one-page handout for the session will be provided. Students will need paper or a notebook and a writing instrument they feel comfortable with.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learner progress is assessed by observing student engagement in the writing process and their ability to identify the fears writers face and articulate them, as well as what is needed to write beyond these common blocks.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Students are encouraged to write honestly and fearlessly. Parents are encouraged to give students the space to write without fear of parental disapproval.
