In this one-time online class for 13-17 years, we will discuss Charles Dickens’ writing style and imitate it, learning to “write like the Dickens.”

Why do we still read _Great Expectations_ and _A Christmas Carol_? You’ll hear many answers to this question, but I believe it’s due, in large part, to Dickens’ writing. It’s awe-inspiring, for readers and wannabe writers alike. In this class, we will begin by reading and discussing a short sample of Dickens’ elaborate, precise prose. We will identify how he uses a variety of sentence lengths and types as well as balanced sentences, parallelism, and repetition. Then we will start the fun...
**Identifying stylistic techniques in writing. **Paying attention to writing style while reading/the value of sentence variety in writing. **Practice with composing longer, more complex sentences with correct punctuation.
Print out of one passage, paper, pencil/pen.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
