In this 6-week class, young songwriters will dive into the art of creating impactful lyrics and melodies, drawing inspiration from Taylor Swift’s legendary songwriting style. From crafting personal stories to building unforgettable hooks, students will develop the skills and confidence to compose their own original songs.

Designed for ages 10-15, this class takes students on a creative journey through Taylor Swift's diverse techniques, including her use of vivid imagery, emotional storytelling, and dynamic rhyme schemes. 

Each week, students will explore a different aspect of songwriting through listening examples, guided discussions, and hands-on exercises. They'll learn how to transform their thoughts, experiences, and emotions into relatable and expressive songs.

Sessions are interactive and supportive, featuring opportunities to share ideas, workshop drafts, and collaborate with classmates. By the end of the course, students will have written and polished their own original song, gaining valuable tools they can use for future songwriting endeavors. 

Along the way, they’ll build confidence, refine their unique artistic voice, and gain a deeper appreciation for the power of music.

No prior songwriting experience is required—just bring a love of music and creativity!

Learning Goals

Students will develop a foundational understanding of songwriting concepts, learning the essential building blocks of music creation and composition.
Through careful study and practice, students will explore and understand Taylor Swift's signature songwriting techniques, learning how to thoughtfully adapt these approaches to enhance their own creative style.

Lesson 1:
Introduction to Songwriting and Taylor Swift’s Style
 • Discover the basics of songwriting: structure, rhyme, and rhythm.
• Explore Taylor's approach to personal and relatable storytelling.
• Begin brainstorming song ideas.

Crafting a Story Through Lyrics
 • Learn how to write vivid and emotional lyrics using imagery and metaphors.
• Study examples from Taylor's songs like "All Too Well" and "Enchanted."
• Write the first verse of a song.

Creating Catchy Hooks and Choruses
 • Understand the elements of a memorable hook or chorus.
• Analyze examples from songs like "Shake It Off" and "Blank Space."
• Write a chorus for their song and pair it with the first verse.

Exploring Melody and Rhythm
 • Experiment with creating melodies and fitting lyrics to rhythm.
• Use simple tools like humming or keyboard apps to shape a melody.
• Workshop their melody and refine it with feedback.

Supply List
Students should arrive to class with a way to compose their ideas, either with pen/pencil on paper or on a computer or other device.

Musical instruments are not required, but welcome if a student would like to write their songs with the accompaniment of a guitar, ukulele, piano, etc.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
