Class Experience

Students will develop their creative writing skills through the challenge of writing a story in only a few words. We will review the difference between fiction and non-fiction, mood, and syntax skills.
I have been teaching some form of the six-word story to students for years. While teaching freshmen and sophomore students at Oregon State University, I needed an engaging way to get my students thinking closely about their word choices—the six-word story did the trick! My students loved the creativity and the challenge of the form and I loved telling the legend behind it. When I taught English at the high school level, I adapted the six-word story for my new students. Again, they engaged with the lesson and began thinking closely about their words.

As many times as I’ve taught a version of this class, I’ve never seen students board by it and I’ve never lost my passion for teaching it. This time, I’ve adapted the lesson again to younger students and an online platform and I can’t wait to start teaching!
All work will be completed in class.
