In this author study and writer's workshop, students examine some of history's greatest authors before creating an inspired, original piece. Each week we study the works of a spotlight author, taking into account their style, messages, tone, voice, and more. After learning a bit about the author's biography and works, the class will explore a signature element of the featured author's writing. Students are then given a writing prompt inspired by the author's work. Students will spend time...
Each lesson students will: ♦ Study the life and works of a spotlight author. ♦ Perform a close reading and examine a highlighted element (style, dialogue, characterization, personification, hyperbole, etc.) used by the featured author. ♦ Draft, craft, and (optionally) share a piece of original work based upon a writing prompt inspired by the spotlight author. ♦ Give, receive, and apply constructive feedback using a positive, peer workshopping model.
