US Grade Kindergarten - 1
In this one-time writing class, kindergarten and first grade students will practice reading a short, silly, ninja story from which they will gather rhyming vocabulary, antonyms, and ideas. These ideas will be used to write a short story of their own. First, students will warm up with some Ninja moves and discuss when it is okay to do them and when it is not, and to remember that as today’s story develops. Each student will then get a chance to show what ninja moves they know. Next, the teacher will read the story, “Ninja, Ninja, Never Stop!” by Todd Tuell, to the class, as together they compile a list of antonyms. Students will do the moves in the book as they read, and discuss rhyming words. These lists will then be used to create a short story with a beginning, middle and end. Students will be invited to collaborate with the class to write the story or create an original piece of their own. Students will have an opportunity to share their stories in class, and then finish the illustrations, if they like, after class. Expect your learner to be actively learning, they will be out of their seats at times, and may be punching, kicking and yelling during the class. This is a great class for students that are full of energy, writing, or have an interest in learning to write.
Learning Goals
Students will learn what antonyms and synonyms are. They will identify and create rhyming words so that they are able to arrange and organize their ideas to create a short story.
