Class Experience

This class is divided into three sections: ADVENTURE STORY, POETRY and STAGE MONOLOGUE.

The first three classes students will explore three popular classic children's books: Pete the Cat, Frog and Toad, and "Are You My Mother?". We will discuss the components of a "Hero's Journey" story adventure and learn about internal vs. external conflict. Armed with these examples and information, students will then have the opportunity to write their own children's adventure story and read them aloud!

Day #1:
Day one we are examining books that work! Why are these books that children love? In this class Ms. Jackson will read books and learners can remember their younger years.

Day #2:
Day two we are outlining the adventurous assignment! Students will write a 15-20 page (2-5 sentences per page!) hero's journey adventure story geared for children ages 5-10. The story should have a hero and an internal or external conflict, challenges on the journey, and end with a resolution to the conflict. Students can exercise all their imagination and creativity to create fun and interesting characters for children to enjoy!

Days 3-4:
On these days students will have writing time and sharing time. On the final day they will share their adventure stories with the class.

Day 5-6:
Ms. Jackson shares some popular poems for students and we will begin writing. We will experiment writing different types of poems: acrostic, cinquain, and a color poem. We will discuss how can a reader engage with an audience when reading poetry? Practice. Students choose the favorite poem they have written and recites it to the class.

Day 7-8:
Class six students learn about creating a character and then write and perform a stage monologue for that character.

Hello! I've been teaching theatre for 26 years and I was also a children's performer for ten of those years. I own a theatre program and I put on a show after every 20 hours of instruction (almost 60 shows in six years!). I teach children ages 3-20. I've been teaching in some capacity since 1996: public, private, homeschool, online.

I believe EVERYONE needs and wants to be creative and expressive. Sydney Clemens says "Art has the role in education of helping children become like themselves instead of more like everyone else" and my goal is to allow students a safe place to explore and shine and comfortably be themselves.
