In this six-week course, students will read nonfiction text and write multi-paragraph essays in response to writing prompts.

Class experience

US Grade 5 - 8
1. Students will analyze nonfiction texts.
2. Students will determine the number of paragraphs needed to complete the writing tasks.
3. Students will plan and compose an essay in response to an analytical writing prompt that includes proper multi-paragraph format; development of ideas using details from the texts; elaboration on how details support the thesis; transitions; domain-specific vocabulary; and a conclusion.

Homework Offered
Students should print out the graphic organizer available in the class discussion and bring it for note-taking for Week 1. Students will be expected to finish work not completed during sessions before the next session meets.

Assessments Offered
Students are invited to submit their final essay assigned during Week 6 to Ms. Heather for a formal evaluation and feedback for up to one week after the last class. Students will receive informal feedback during sessions as well.

Students should bring graphic organizer provided in class discussion to Week 1 session. Students should also bring a notebook and writing utensil or an electronic device on which to type.
Several nonfiction articles will be presented to students on social studies and science subjects included in Content Standards for grades 6-8.
