Welcome to Writing Descriptively 101! This class is all about the essentials of descriptive writing, but it's structured in a very simple and immersive way that won't feel complicated at all. If you're interested in writing descriptively for poems or stories but are nervous about its complexity--look no further! This is a one-time lecture-style class where we will get together and learn all about descriptive writing. Topics covered are Simile, Metaphor, Adverbs and Adverb Abuse, and writing with the five senses. I use google slides to show students a slideshow, and they can take notes at home if they'd like! I will teach by going over a concept, and then explaining it more deeply for the students using numerous examples. I believe that this method is best for student learning for this class. By the end of class, students will make their own descriptive sentences, and we will share them with each other! My teaching style is very simple and straightforward. I don't confuse students with big words and complicated ideas--I like to break things down to the basics. Students don't need any prior knowledge about creative writing to understand this class, but it does make the discussion richer if they already know some techniques of descriptive writing.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Mary Ukpong and I am an aspiring neuroscientist, polyglot, and author! I have years of prior teaching experience with young children, and am excited to teach the new generation all about Neuroscience and Language in a fun and engaging way!
I graduated in 2020 with a B.S. in Behavioral Neuroscience from Florida Atlantic University, and I’ve taught English topics to over 1000 students through online ESL teaching. I have years of experience speaking conversational Japanese through media and also formal classes.
I believe that there's no such thing as a dumb question and that it's okay to make mistakes because mistakes are how we learn. As someone who is Gen Z myself, I'm easily able to relate to the concerns and thoughts of young children and teens.
Fun facts about me:
-I have finished writing my first young adult novel!
-I was 13 when I started learning Japanese
-Also when I was 13, I won my school spelling bee and went all the way to county-level :)
If you're a student at all interested in writing, Japanese language, or neuroscience (taught upon request), I would love to walk you through these topics in a gentle, informative, and encouraging way.
I look forward to working with you and yours!
-Teacher Mary
