In the first few weeks we will practice creative writing skills and learn to describe settings, invent interesting characters, create exciting dialogue to develop the story, and explore ideas for plots. Then we will plan our story and start our story writing. As the stories grow we will work on editing, peer editing and learn ways to improve our writing, such as showing not telling and adding specific details. As a community of writers we will share our writing and encourage each other...
Students will learn or further develop their creative writing skills. They will gain confidence in their ability to write and they will learn techniques to engage their imagination. Students will learn strong editing skills and gain confidence in sharing their writing with their peers. Students will also learn the mechanics of publishing a book. They will become competent at putting together a completed chapter book.
Once their story is started students will need to spend some time at home writing. The amount of time this takes will depend on the student. Some students end up writing very long stories and others will have shorter ones. The expectation is that they have five chapters, but it is a choice how long each chapter is.
Students will receive feedback on their writing throughout the course and will have assistance with final editing and proofreading, so that their work is completed to a high standard.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
