Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this after-Christmas one-time class, students develop skills in opinion writing and paragraph organization by sharing about a gift they like! This is the class plan for this lesson: Before class: - Brainstorm what Christmas present you would like to write about. - Get writing paper ready and pencil sharpened! During class (estimated times): 1. Intro - Introduce ourselves and show-and-tell about a gift we received and what we like about our gifts. - 5 minutes 3. Read together sample opinion paragraphs about Christmas gifts and learn about paragraph organization. - 10 minutes 5. Brainstorm/rehearse topic sentences and evidence together. - 5 minutes 6. Individual writing time - about 7 minutes 7. Write the conclusion with support. - 3 minutes 8. Sharing time - 5 minutes 9. Receive feedback - 5 minutes 10. Say goodbye Students who would like to may also draw an illustration of their gift to share with the class. The teacher provides specific positive feedback about the students' writing as well as a specific idea for revision in each learner's paragraph. Note: Some students may not feel ready to share their paragraphs at the end of class, or they may want extra time to complete them. In these cases, students may submit their paragraph within seven days from when class ends. The teacher will provide specific feedback within seven days from the date of that submission.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I received a Bachelor of Arts in English with an emphasis in creative writing from Union University in Jackson, Tennessee in 2011 and a Master of Arts in Teaching, Elementary Education from Western Governor's University in 2024. As a college student, I critiqued my peers' essay at my university's tutoring center. Later, I taught a year of middle school literature and grammar at a local private school and three years of middle-school group writing classes through an online school. All of these opportunities, gave me ample experience appreciating students' ideas, and providing them with specific words of encouragement and challenges. During my 2024 student teaching experience for my master's program, I loved helping second graders develop organizational skills in their paragraph writing.
