Class Experience
Every November, writers around the world set out to achieve a singular goal: to write a 50,000 word novel in one month. Seem daunting? It doesn’t have to be! With the support of their peers and teacher, students will be given the tools they need to accomplish this task. For the first thirty days of class, students will attempt to write a full novel in that time frame. They’ll receive support through posts, discussions, and interactive games. Weekly "Writing Tips with Ms. Rose" posts will offer tips and helpful hints for overcoming writer’s block, beating procrastination, and getting your story moving again when you get stuck. On our weekly sharing days students will share excerpts from their books and give and receive constructive criticism. Every Wednesday, we will take a brain break and play some fun, interactive games. There will also be occasional optional live "write-ins" (held based on student interest). The last week days of class students will share their final word counts and receive tips and support for life after completing their novel. While the typical "write a novel in a month" goal is 50,000 words, any student who gets to the end of the month having written something can consider this month a success. Students can also participate in this class with a different word count goal. As a fun bonus, I, the teacher, will also be participating in NaNoWriMo! I look forward to writing with you! Since November starts on a Monday this year we will follow a weekly schedule of Monday through Sunday. Here is the breakdown of how the class will go each week: Monday: Overview of the coming week/word count check Tuesday: Writing Tips with Ms. Rose Thursday: Sharing Day (post an excerpt for feedback) Friday: Writing Games* *Writing Games: Week 1: Who? (learners explore the roles of different characters) Week 2: What? (learners explore alternative scenarios for their stories) Week 3: When? (learners explore different time periods) Week 4: Where? (learners explore different story settings) Week 5: Why? (learners explore character motivations)
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to set and keep a daily writing habit and, through peer and instructor support, make the push to finally write that novel that's been in their head. They will also learn how to support their peers in their writing goals.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
This class will be a challenge for learners, especially those on the young end of the age range. Parents should be prepared to support their children throughout this class. Parent encouragement and support will be a huge factor in learner success!
Supply List
Learners should have access to a computer in order to do most, if not all, of their writing. This will be the easiest way for learners to keep track of their word count. They will also be expected to use Google Docs on weekly sharing days.
