Class Experience

In this class, students will write a research paper on a fashion topic of their choosing. This is a great way to learn good research skills, as well as develop higher level writing skills, all while dealing with a topic the student enjoys. Plus, my methods make this sometimes daunting experience very simple and straightforward!

Session 1: The Research Question
What makes a good research question? Possibilities include; How did fashion change from 1950-1970? What impact did Alexander McQueen have on 21st century fashion? Is fast fashion sustainable?
Students should come to class with some ideas of fashion topics that they might like to research. We will spend the class discussing what makes a good question, and going over the steps that come next.
HW: Submit a research question on the classroom before Session 2.

Session 2: Research Techniques
Now that students have a research question, we must begin our research. Students will explore different avenues for sources, as well as define the difference between a good source and a bad source, and define the parameters of what a source can be. We will also discuss other methods for research, including collecting data.
HW: Students should collect & submit at least 3 sources to use towards answering their research question

Session 3: Outlining
We will begin to outline what our research paper will look like. Final papers should be between 4-6 pages long, and include an introduction, conclusion, as well as several body paragraphs. We will discuss different sections that can be included, such as data tables and captioned images.
HW: Students will submit a draft of an outline for their research paper. Students should also be continuing to collect research.

Session 4: Body Paragraphs
We will discuss and practice writing body paragraphs for a research paper. We will look at how it is possible to put our research in "conversation" with each other, while adding our own conclusions presented by the research. We will look at examples and begin to create our own.
HW: Students will submit one body paragraph for critique.

Session 5: Formatting
We will discover why we use APA format to cite our sources in a social studies paper, and how to do it quickly and easily. We will begin creating our bibliographies.
HW: Create and present a brief presentation on your research

Session 6: Presentations
Students will present their research.
HW: Submit final draft of research paper

I have spent my academic career writing research papers on both literary and social studies topics, and also appreciated when teachers allowed students to choose their own topic. It's important to know how to conduct and present research, but I believe students will always learn so much better when they're working with material they are actually interested in.

I have been lucky enough in my academic career to be have the freedom to research on topics that I enjoy, from monster theory to comparative international education, and I hate to think of students having to slog through a research paper on a topic that they don't really care about because, as my thesis professor always said- "you must love your research, because you'll be spending a lot of time with it!"
